The Nevada County Democrats Marching in the 4th of July Parade in Grass Valley.

Dear Nevada County Democrats,

As summer heats up, so does our commitment to defending democracy, informing our community, and preparing for the critical months ahead. From our family-friendly booth at the Nevada County Fair to protests, trainings, and more, this month is packed with opportunities to take action and connect.

Democrats at The Nevada County Fair, August 6 - 10

This year’s county fair booth, created by NC Dems and Indivisible, is themed "Partners for Democracy." Visitors of all ages are welcome to enjoy free lollipops and spin a prize wheel designed especially for young people. Older visitors will be invited to select their top five issues from a list of 21, helping inform our local campaign strategies, candidates and press materials.

Guests can also sign up for newsletters, volunteer opportunities, and confirm their voter registration status - those not yet registered can do so via paper application or QR code.

The booth will also have informative literature on protecting our freedoms and democracy, as well as a laptop playing videos from recent protests. We hope to see you at the Fair!

Support the Eleanor Roosevelt Scholarship Fund Recipients

Caroline Fike and Aubrey Sayre, two outstanding students from Ghidotti Early College High School, are the 2025 recipients of Democratic Woman’s Club of Nevada County Scholarship Essay Awards.

Caroline is headed to Cal Poly, and Aubrey to Reed College - both filled with enthusiasm and deep gratitude for the support that’s helping make their college dreams possible. The DWNC is proud to invest in these emerging scholars and leaders - but we need your help.

We need to raise $700 to fully fund their scholarships. Every dollar from this campaign goes directly to the scholarship fund!

Please consider making a contribution today.

Your support truly makes a difference.

Take our Survey

The Nevada County Democrats are searching for a new headquarters, and we want your input. On June 24th, the Facility Subcommittee hosted a Democracy Workshop where participants shared ideas about what the future home of the NCDCC could be like. From that discussion, five key priorities emerged.

We’d like feedback from as many members as possible.

Select the ONE priority you believe is most important for our new headquarters:

A visible, welcoming, and accessible location

A center for candidate support

A media and communications center

Flexible space for meetings, workshops, and storage

Amenities such as a kitchen and bathroom

August Newsletter Message from the Chair

To all seasoned activists: pace yourselves. Remember that long arc of the moral universe that bends toward justice? Some days it feels less like a gently bending curve and more like a rubber band snapping us backwards in time. But Martin Luther King never promised us that our path along that arc would be easy.  We all must pay our dues, generation by generation.

Just a month ago, I visited the LBJ Library in Austin, Texas. Lyndon B. Johnson – once a racist Southern Democrat – managed to transcend his upbringing and push forward the monumental Great Society legislation that opened the way for today’s push for inclusion. Now, of course, that legacy is being methodically dismantled by Beltway consultants, who are well paid to ensure that not a shred of this generous and altruistic impulse is left standing. For the chief culprit, here, look no farther than the Heritage Foundation, whose blueprint for authoritarian misrule, Project 2025, is being rolled out in a blizzard of shameless disinformation even as I write.

Breathe. The fight is not over – not until you are tossed in a gulag by your adversaries. Or toss yourself in for lack of grit. Don’t let that happen – not while your country needs you like never before. Resist the accelerating madness with all your heart and soul.

Lately, I find myself unexpectedly moved by Governor Gavin Newsom. For a long time, I wondered whether Gavin had it in him to be America’s Alexei Navalny. From the speeches he is giving these days, it seems I may have underestimated the man. Gavin has heart.

At the nexus of all our woes these days lies the issue of character, or rather the lack of same. Shameless timeservers like Lindsey Graham, cynical fixers like Mitch McConnell, these are the people who have brought us to this pass. It is their complete lack of character that cleared the way for the return of Donald Trump – just as it is the courage and determination of people of exceptional character that will lead us out. People like Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, Jamie Raskin, Adam Schiff, and all the others whose integrity and fortitude earn respect across the aisle. These men and women are admirable not because of their politics, but because of their principles.

Advice: Let us all look beyond our own personal politics and recognize that only the broadest possible coalition stands a chance against the oligarch-funded assault on democracy that is MAGA.  Some may say that American democracy has at last met its match in the form of a hate-and fear-fueled personality cult, but I don’t think so. We as a #country are better than that. Character still counts.
